Power Integrations Launches Automotive Reference Designs with InnoSwitch3-AQ
Power Integrations Introduces 1700 V InnoSwitch3-AQ-Based Reference Designs for 800 V Automotive Applications
Power Integrations, a leading innovator in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, has announced the release of five new reference designs specifically targeting the rapidly growing 800 V automotive application space. These designs are based on the company’s robust 1700 V InnoSwitch3-AQ flyback switcher ICs, renowned for their high voltage capabilities and reliability in automotive environments. Spanning a power output range from 16 W to 120 W, these innovative reference designs leverage both traditional wound transformers and compact, low-profile planar transformers. They are specifically tailored for critical automotive applications such as high-voltage DC-DC bus conversion, reliable inverter emergency power supplies, advanced battery management systems, and efficient power supplies for various auxiliary systems within the vehicle.
A key feature of these new reference designs is the incorporation of Power Integrations’ newly introduced wide-creepage InSOP-28G package. This advanced package design is crucial for high-voltage applications, supporting up to 1000 VDC on the primary side while providing the necessary creepage and clearance distances between pins as mandated for pollution degree 2 environments. This enhanced isolation capability significantly improves system safety and reliability.
According to Mike Stroka, product marketing engineer at Power Integrations, "The new InSOP-28G package, with its wide 5.1 mm drain-to-source pin creepage distance, directly addresses the critical need for enhanced safety and long-term reliability in high-voltage automotive applications. This robust isolation level is often sufficient to eliminate the requirement for conformal coating, thereby saving a significant manufacturing process step and the associated qualification efforts. The InnoSwitch3-AQ IC, featuring an integrated 1700 V silicon-carbide (SiC) switch, emerges as an ideal solution for the evolving 800 V vehicle platforms, simplifying manufacturing processes while simultaneously enhancing overall system performance and reliability."
The following comprehensive reference designs are all isolated flyback converters that utilize the highly integrated 1700 V-rated CV/CC InnoSwitch3-AQ switcher ICs. The portfolio includes three detailed reference design kits (RDKs) and two comprehensive design example reports (DERs):
- RDK-994Q: A 35 W ultra-low-profile power supply designed for traction inverter gate-drive applications or as an emergency power supply. It features a wide input voltage range of 40-1000 VDC and provides a regulated 24 V output.
- RDK-1039Q: An 18 W power supply incorporating a planar transformer, specifically designed for traction inverter gate driver circuits or emergency power supply functionality.
- RDK-1054Q: A high-power 120 W power supply utilizing a planar transformer, strategically designed to significantly shrink or even completely eliminate the need for heavy and bulky traditional 12 V batteries in certain automotive architectures.
- DER-1030Q: A versatile 20 W four-output power supply. It includes one dedicated emergency power supply (EPS) output providing 24.75 V and three independent gate-drive power supply outputs, each delivering 25.5 V.
- DER-1045Q: A compact 16 W four-output power supply solution. It features one 14 V EPS output and three gate-drive outputs with split voltage rails of +18 V and -5 V.
Power Integrations’ 1700 V-rated Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based CV/CC InnoSwitch3-AQ switching power supply ICs are capable of delivering up to an impressive 120 watts of output power. These highly integrated ICs significantly reduce the overall power supply bill of materials (BOM) count by as much as 50 percent, leading to substantial space savings on the PCB, enhanced system reliability due to fewer components, and simplified component sourcing challenges for manufacturers. These advanced ICs feature a low startup voltage, initiating operation with as little as 30 volts on the drain pin without requiring any external startup circuitry, a critical requirement for many functional safety-related automotive applications. Additional integrated protection features include comprehensive input under-voltage protection, robust output over-voltage protection, and reliable over-current limiting. The power consumption of these ICs is remarkably low, typically less than 15 mW under no-load conditions, contributing to overall system efficiency. Furthermore, the ICs incorporate synchronous rectification on the secondary side and a versatile valley switching, discontinuous/continuous conduction mode (DCM/CCM) flyback controller capable of achieving efficiency levels greater than 91 percent.
